Step 1: Get a Quote

To get started, simply request a quote with Octopus at anytime. They’ll present you with a range of options so you can choose the best tariff for your business. To provide an accurate quote, they’ll need the following information:

  • The address of the business (site) you want to supply, including the postcode.
  • Your estimated annual consumption (EAC), which can typically be found on an old energy bill or by contacting your previous supplier.


If you have your MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) for electricity or MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) for gas, providing these details will help them give you an even more accurate quote. You can usually find them on previous bills.

Step 2: Choose Your Tariff

Once you’ve provided your usage (exact or estimated) and business address, we’ll display all the tariffs available to you. You can then compare and choose the best option for your business needs. We offer a range of tariffs and contract lengths for both dual fuel and electricity-only options.

All of our tariffs are powered by 100% renewable energy, and you can select from flexible 12, 24, or 36-month contracts.

At this stage, you’ll also be able to view a detailed breakdown of each tariff, including the standing charge, unit rate, and an estimate of your annual and monthly costs. This ensures you can make an informed choice that suits your business.

Step 3: Sign Up to Octopus Energy

Once you’ve spoken with your current supplier and have selected a tariff that suits your business, you’re ready to sign up!

To complete the sign-up, you’ll need to provide your company details, payment information, and just a few minutes of your time.

During the process, we’ll ask you when you’d like your energy switch to happen. You can choose to switch immediately, schedule it for the next month, or plan for up to 6 months in the future—whatever works best for you!

Step 4: Receive Your Welcome Pack

You’re now all signed up and ready to go! We’ll send you an email to welcome you, along with:

  • A Welcome Pack – This will include all the details of your new tariff, including your rates and the start date for your energy supply. If you’d like to change the start date, simply send us an email and we’ll take care of it.
  • Advance Payment Invoice – To offer you the best rates, we take an advance payment, typically equal to 3 months’ estimated energy costs. This helps smooth out any fluctuations in business usage. Depending on your credit score, it could be up to 6 months. This payment will be held until the end of your contract, at which point it will be fully refunded to you—it doesn’t count towards your monthly energy bills.
  • Terms and Conditions – For full transparency, we’ll provide the T&Cs for your contract, which you can review here.


If you’re ready to switch immediately, the process will take about 5-6 days for electricity and 16-17 days for gas.

Step 5: Give Us a Meter Reading

Five days before your official switchover date, we’ll send you an email requesting your meter reading. You’ll have until five days after your switchover date to submit the reading (all the details will be in your welcome email).

If we don’t receive a reading from you within this 10-day window, we’ll estimate your usage based on data from your previous supplier. To ensure everything’s accurate, it’s best to provide your reading on time!

Step 6: Your First Payment

We’ll take your advance payment on or shortly after your switchover date. This payment will be held while you’re with us and refunded in full at the end of your contract.

You’ll receive monthly invoices from us, and payment for these will be taken via Variable Direct Debit seven days after the invoice is issued. To help keep your monthly bills as accurate as possible, don’t forget to send us regular meter readings. This ensures you’re only paying for the energy you actually use!
